Dr. Z.S. Meharwal is the Executive Director and Head of Cardiac Surgery, Heart Transplantation, and Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD) program at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute (FEHI).
With over 32 years of experience as a Cardiac Surgeon, Dr. Meharwal has successfully performed more than 30,000 surgeries, including complex heart procedures and left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantations.
He is a pioneer in introducing new cardiac surgery techniques in India, contributing significantly to advancements in heart surgery.
Dr. Meharwal completed his MBBS, MS, and MCh from King George Medical College, Lucknow, and has been affiliated with prestigious institutions like King’s College Hospital, London, UK, and G.B. Pant Hospital, Delhi.
He is deeply involved in training and education, serving as the Programme Director of DNB Cardiothoracic Surgery at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute. He has trained numerous Indian and international surgeons, many of whom are now practicing independently.
Dr. Meharwal is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences and has published extensively in peer-reviewed medical journals, sharing his expertise in cardiac surgery.
His contributions to cardiac surgery have earned him several accolades, including the President’s Award for his outstanding work in the field.
He received the Citation Award from the President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, at the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery Meeting in 2002, and the Saharanpur Aditya Samman from the Government of UP in 2005 for his contributions to medicine.
In 2008, Dr. Meharwal entered the Limca Book of Records for performing Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG) on a 94-year-old patient, the oldest individual to undergo this procedure.
He is a member of several prestigious medical organizations, including the Indian Association of Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgeons, the Cardiological Society of India, the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery, and the Asian Society of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery.
He has also published various research articles in reputed national and international journals.
