Varicocele Surgery Cost in India

Varicocele is a condition in which the veins of your scrotum become enlarged. Your scrotum is the pouch of the skin that covers your testicles and holds them.

Have you seen enlarged veins in somebody’s legs? You call them varicose veins. Similarly, the veins present in the scrotum can enlarge and lead to varicocele. It develops when the pampiniform plexus veins in the scrotum get enlarged.

As there is varicosity or the twisting and swelling of veins, varicocele is a painful condition. It can develop during puberty and veins can grow larger before they come to your notice. Though varicocele can develop on either side of the body, it is more common on the left side of the scrotum.

The prevalence of varicocele on the left side is due to the design of the human male anatomy. The presence of varicocele on both sides is extremely rare.

Around 10 to 15% of the boys all over suffer from varicocele. It is majorly present in men between the ages of 15 t0 25 years.

If you are one suffering from varicocele and need guidance about the treatment in India, you are at the right place. Al Afiya Medi Tour can guide you through the treatment, especially if you are coming from Ethiopia.

Know why varicocele needs treatment?

Varicocele may not cause any symptoms. But it can lead to the following-

  • Pain-

The condition can be painful for some boys.

  • Infertility-

Varicocele can lead to harm on the testes. This can lead to low sperm count, low sperm mobility, and damaged sperm which in turn can cause problems in fathering a child. Nearly four in ten men with fertility problems have varicocele.

  • Limited growth of one of the testicles-

The pressure exerted by swollen veins causes limited growth of the affected testicles.

How can you diagnose varicocele?

Mostly, you can feel the growth of veins in your scrotum during your regular examination. A doctor can diagnose it in a routine examination. He can feel it as a bag of worms and the affected scrotum looks as if it is surrounded by worms on inspection.

Your urologist looks for varicocele by having you in a standing position. He may ask you to take a deep breath, hold it, and bear down. During this maneuver, your urologist feels your scrotum above the testicle. Doctors call this technique the ‘Valsalva maneuver’. This technique helps your urologist find any enlarged veins on your scrotum.

To confirm the diagnosis, your urologist can order a scrotal ultrasound test. The signs of varicocele on an ultrasound will include veins that are wider than 3 millimeters with blood flowing incorrectly during the Valsalva maneuver. The scrotal ultrasound will reveal the size of the testicles. It also guides your urologist on the way to treat you.

Your urologist may also order other scans to rule out any other cause of varicocele, such as the existence of a tumor that compresses the spermatic vein. After analyzing the cause of your varicocele, your urologist will plan further treatment.

The types of treatment your urologist will make you aware of for varicocele for Ethiopian patients

The doctor will advise you regarding the options of treatments available. They can include:

  1. Surgery-
During the surgical process, the doctor will focus on blocking the blood flow into the pampiniform plexus veins. The procedure can include-
  1. i) Microscopic varicocele-

In this technique, the surgeon will proceed with making one centimeter of incision above the scrotum. The procedure is done under a microscope and includes ligation of all small veins and spares the vas deferens, testicular arteries, and lymphatic drainage. The complete procedure can take 2 to 3 hours. The doctor will usually discharge the patient on the same day.

  1. ii) Laparoscopic varicocelectomy-

In this technique, your surgeon will insert thin tubes in the abdomen and proceed with ligation of veins. Since the number of veins in the abdomen that shall be ligated is lesser than the ones in the scrotum, this technique will take less time. It will last for 30 to 40 minutes. Usually, the doctor will discharge the patient on the same day.
  1. Percutaneous Embolization-

The interventional radiologist will perform embolization. In the process, the medical professional proceeds with an injection of contrast through a tube with x-ray guidance to reach the source of the problem. The procedure aims to find all veins leading to the varicocele. To block the blood flow to the varicocele and scar them down, the medical staff will use coils, plugs with or without sclerosant.

This procedure is done either with local anesthesia or under light sedation. It can last from 45 minutes to an hour.

Let us introduce you to the procedure your urologist will guide for varicocele surgery

When you have to go through surgery, there are three main parts your surgery will be divided into:

  1. Before the procedure-

Your doctor will inquire about your medications or supplements. He will advise you to stop taking any blood thinners such as aspirin a few days before the surgery, especially to decrease the risk of bleeding during the surgery.

He will also instruct you regarding fasting as you will not eat anything at least 8 to 12 hours before the surgery. The doctor will also ensure that you have an attendant at your service who can bring you to the surgery and take you out after the discharge.

  1. During the Procedure-

Immediately before the surgery, the medical staff will ask you to remove your clothes and change into a hospital gown. Further, the doctor will ask you to lie down on a surgical table and will give you general anesthesia through an intravenous line booster. Your surgeon will then insert a bladder catheter to remove urine while you are under the effect of anesthesia.

Further, the most commonly used procedure is a laparoscopic varicocelectomy. It is done with several small incisions. The surgeon uses a laparoscope, light and camera to visualize inside your body. Your doctor will also introduce gas into your abdomen to allow more space for the procedure. Moreover, he will insert surgical tools through small cuts and use them to cut any in large veins that block blood flow. To finish the procedure, the doctor will seal off the ends of the veins by small clamps or by cauterizing them with heat. He will further remove the tools and laparoscope once the cut veins are completely sealed.

Surgery work will take around one to two hours and you will get the discharge probably on the same day itself.

  1. After the procedure:

There are certain instructions in medicines your doctor will give you. You will need to take any medication or antibiotic that your doctor prescribes. Your doctor will also advise you to take painkillers to manage your pain after the surgery.

Further, your doctor will instruct you to clean your incisions but you can get it done by visiting the hospital. You will have to apply an ice pack to your scrotum for 10 minutes several times a day to control the swelling.

The other precautions that are advised include:

  1. You cannot have sex for nearly two weeks after the surgery.
  2. Moreover, you are not allowed to perform any hard exercise or lift any heavyweight.
  3. The patient cannot swim or take a bath by immersing your scrotum in water.
  4. Your doctor will ask you to not drive or open any machinery.
  5. You should not strain yourself when on a poop. In case you have constipation, your doctor will prescribe your stool softener.
