Plastic Surgery- Cost, Types, Risk, Benefits & Potential Complications

Plastic surgery is the process of regenerating different body parts. Plastic surgery is done due to any physical injury and for cosmetic purposes. In plastic surgery, the word plastic does not mean artificial the word comes from the Greek word plastikos, which means mould or give form. Surgery also improves and reconstructs the function of the body as well as its appearance. Plastic surgery is preferable for all body parts except the central nervous system. The surgery to restore the abnormal structure of the body can be due to trauma, infection, disease, tumours, and developmental abnormalities.

    Pre Procedure

There is a specific set of pre-operation guidelines to help you. The doctor will give all the instructions to you and your loved ones. For the plastic surgery preparation, some general pre-operation guidelines for you are the following:

    Stop smoking:

Stop smoking one month before surgery and two weeks after surgery. Smoking decreases the circulation to the skin and can create complications after surgery.

    Stop medication:

Discontinue medications that contain aspirin, vitamin E, blood thinners, and herbal supplements. Avoid medications 1-2 weeks before surgery and one week after surgery. The medicines can cause continuous bleeding.

    Signs of cold and infection:

Report the signs of infection that appear one week before surgery. You may need to postpone your operation due to inflammation to prevent complications.

    Fill your prescription:

Fill your prescription and bring it home along with a notepad. There can be some forgetfulness after narcotic use. Do not drive or drink alcohol after taking a narcotic medicine for pain.

    Constipation:

Constipation is common during surgical procedures. Drink a lot of water and a well-balanced diet containing fruits and vegetables before and after surgery.

    Change in the menstrual cycle:

A woman can note changes in the menstrual cycle. The cycle can be lighter and shorter.

Do not eat 8 hours before surgery:

Do not eat and drink anything 8 hours before surgery. You can drink apple juice and water 4 hours before surgery.

    Take care of yourself:

Arrange a responsible person to take care of yourself. Everyone has mood swings, pain, and soreness during recovery.

    Blood test:

You should take a blood test 1-2 days before surgery.

    Pre-operation check-up

Before the operation, visits your doctor. A doctor will take your physical exam and discuss your health with your doctor.

Some hospitals also ask you to meet with an anaesthesia nurse and discuss your health.

The anesthesiologist gives you the painkillers after surgery.

    Tests before surgery

Your doctor can tell you that you need some tests before surgery. These tests are following:

    • A blood test, kidney, liver, and blood sugar tests.
    • Chest X-ray (for lungs)
    • ECG (for the heart)

Some doctors need more tests depending on your age, health, and type of your operation.

    Process of plastic surgery

In plastic surgery, different techniques involve moving and manipulating body tissues.

For the operation, you should consult with your doctor.

A doctor will explain to you the good and bad effects of that treatment.

The skin graft is the main procedure of plastic surgery.

Now different techniques such as tissue expansion and flap surgery are standard. The procedures of plastic surgery are the following:

    Skin graft:

The skin graft is applicable when healthy skin is removed from an unaffected part of skin. The healthy body tissues cover the damaged skin.

The skin graft is suitable for bone fractures and large wounds. There are two types of skin graft.

    Partial-thickness skin graft:

When a thin layer of skin is selected to remove from an area, it usually heals well.

The region of the body can look lighter depending on your skin tone. At last, faint scars are present.

     Full-thickness skin graft

In the full-thickness skin graft, the top layer & lower layer is best for surgery.

The sites for full-thickness graft are the neck, behind the ear, and upper arm.

Before the operation, anaesthesia will be given to you by doctors. The graft area must be in cover/protection with a sterile dressing until it has connected to other body tissues. The donor site is also covered with a bandage to protect from infection. The donor region usually takes two weeks to heel. At first, the grafted area will be red or purple, but after some time, it will look like the surrounding skin. There can be some differences in the grafted and surrounding skin.

    Tissue expansion

In the tissue expansion procedure, the body grows extra by extending surrounding tissues. The additional skin helps repair the nearby area. Tissue expansion is appropriate for breast reconstruction and repairing large wounds. Under local anaesthetic, a device (called an expander) is convenient for the reconstructing region. An expander containing salt water causes the skin to stretch and grow. The time of tissue expansion can vary according to the repairing site.

The large wound can take 3-4 months for the skin to grow. When the skin has expanded, the next step is to remove this skin and reposition the new tissue. In tissue expansion, the regenerated area of skin has the same colour and texture. There is less chance of failing the tissue expansion technique because the blood supply to the skin remains connected every time.

    Flap surgery

In flap surgery, doctors transfer a living tissue from one part of the body to another region, in company with blood vessels to remain the tissue alive.

Flap surgery is best for breast reconstruction, large wounds, and lip palate.

In some cases, half skin remains attached to the body, producing a flap.

The flap is beneficial for covering the damaged skin. Another technique (called a free flap) is also helpful in plastic surgery.

In a free flap technique, your doctor detaches a part of the body and blood vessels. Microsurgery is also helpful for connecting tinny blood vessels at a new position. The operation depends upon the size and location of the flap. In flap surgery, the blood supply to the skin remains connected. There is a minimal chance of failing flap surgery.

Plastic surgery is also convenient for the following problems:

    • breast cancer treatment
    • cleft lip and palate
    • birthmarks
    • carpal tunnel syndrome
    • pressure ulcer
    • Dupuytren contracture

    Post-procedure of plastic surgery

The information about recovery after the operation is necessary. It is essential to discuss the recovery guide with your surgeon.

A doctor will provide detailed instructions regarding his surgical plan and your medical history.

There are some tips for recovery after your surgery is the following:

    Dressing of wound:

Use the bandage according to the instruction of your doctor. The Band-Aid will provide you with the right amount of compression.

If there is a drain, it should be replaced 3-4 times per day. Clean the wet drain is crucial to prevent infection. Wash your hand before and after treating the drains. Record the amount of the outflow and discuss it with your doctor.

    Activity

You should rest totally during the first week of your recovery. Do not exercise. Do not drive heavy machines. Do not do housework until your doctor say that you can do this. No smoking, even second-hand smoking.

After three weeks, you can restart normal activities.

    General comfort:

It is beneficial for you to rise and move into your house. Take deep breaths 5-6 times a day. Use pillows for sleeping to prevent swelling. There can be side effects of anaesthesia. If you feel a slight sore throat, this will recover in 48-72 hours.

    Recovery:

It is crucial to be careful for the 48-72 hours after the surgery. The patient may require family or friends to look after them. There can be some discomfort after surgery. Use painkillers to reduce pain.

Use the antibiotics according to the doctor’s prescription and complete the course. Follow the instructions of the doctor for changing your ice pack.

You should eat within 24 hours after the operation, even if it contains some bites. You should eat light in the first few days. Do not take medicine on an empty stomach.

Drink a lot of water. Check the body temperature. An increase in temperature can lead to infection. The swelling after the operation is conventional.

    Pain management:

You will be very uncomfortable after your surgery for a night. The pain will decrease soon, and you will not need painkillers after one week of the operation. You will heel within a short time if you are not tired from the pain.

The medicine for a pain reliever will be a combination of Tylenol and narcotics. The Medicines are advisable after meals or some intake of food. Double your fluid intake while using these pills to prevent constipation. While taking pain reliever medicine, do not use alcohol because narcotics in the medication can interact with alcohol.

    Wound care:

There is no need to change the bandage 2-3 days after surgery if you do not have drains. In case of outflow, change the covering in the doctor’s clinic.

Do not worry if you have some dark brown drainage on the bandage. When you remove the dressing, you may shower. Do not rub the specific area (be gentle with yourself).

You should also follow the instruction of your doctor at the time of surgery.

    Medication:

Use the medicines according to the instructions of the doctor. Do not use alcohol while taking medication. The narcotics in the drug can react with the alcohol.

Do not take medicines on an empty stomach to prevent nausea. Follow the instructions of your doctor for regular medications.

    General Complications:

There can be some complications after the surgery, such as bleeding, swelling, redness, pain, and pus drainage. In case of these complications, contact your doctor. Less than 100 degrees temperature will be usual for you.

    Call your doctor:

If you feel the temperature is more than usual. In case of excessive bleeding and vomiting, immediately contact your physician.

    Plastic surgery risk and complications

Plastic surgery is not without risk. The results of plastic surgery can even lead to death. Plastic surgery also has side effects like other surgeries. Plastic surgery has significant complications if the patient cannot tolerate surgery well.

Some complications of plastic surgery are the following:

    Scarring:

Scarring is an extensive complication of plastic surgery. Scars cannot produce always. In most cases, lesions can control. If you are not smoking and eating well after the operation, you can reduce the risk of lesions. Scars have a red and raised appearance.

    Nerve damage:

In plastic surgery, the nerve can damage. The results of nerve damage will be more dangerous if it is the facial nerve. The nerve damage can lead to drooping of the eyes and mouth. In breast augmentation, women lose the nipple sensation due to nerve damage.

    Infection:

Infection is a common complication of all surgeries. If the infection is severe, it requires antibiotics. You can reduce the chances of infection through proper wound care and frequent hand washing.

    Necrosis:

Necrosis means the death of tissues. Necrosis can be due to surgery or issues after surgery. In some cases, the tissue death is minor and ordinary. The slight tissue death can remove through the wound healing process.

    Hematoma:

Hematoma is the process of collecting blood outside of blood vessels. Hematoma appears after the surgery. The infected area becomes swell. In most cases, the hematoma is minor. A large hematoma can cause pain and decrease blood flow. The treatment of a large hematoma is to remove blood with a syringe. You can experience hematoma after the breast augmentation process and facelift surgery.

    Poor cosmetic conditions:

The extensive risk for plastic surgery patients is the poor cosmetic outcome. In case of surgery failure, the condition of your face becomes worse than before surgery.

    Bleeding:

Bleeding can occur due to surgical instruments. Bleeding can occur in all surgeries. If the bleeding is excessive and continuous, it becomes an issue. If the bleeding occurs after the surgery, the patient will be too active during the healing procedure. Blood loss is ordinary during the operation, but it can also happen after the surgery. Excessive bleeding can create a decline in your blood pressure.

    Blood clots:

Blood clots are a complication of many procedures rather than surgeries. The blood clot developing in limbs or legs is Deep vein thrombosis. A blood clot is not dangerous if the blood clot does not move toward the heart and lungs.

    Seroma

Seroma is the infection that collects the lymphatic fluid around the site of infection. Seroma is like to hematoma. If there is excessive fluid, doctors remove the fluid through a syringe. Seromas are usual in cosmetic procedures such as tummy tucks.

The physical surgery procedures require rest. If you do not want any complications, take a lot of rest. A person should monitor and take proper care of nutrition and diet to stay fit.

    Death:

All surgical procedures have a risk of death. The risk of death is not more than one per cent. Death can occur in most minor surgery.

How minimize the risk and complications after the surgery?

You can reduce the chance of infection after any surgery. One way to reduce the possibility of complications is to choose the best doctor. Another thing that decreases contamination is a good lifestyle, such as quitting smoking. Non-smokers heal faster.

A good diet before and after the surgery can speed up the process of wound healing and also minimize scarring. Take a large amount of protein because protein speed up the process of wound healing.
